Neither, I believe

Are you seeking security or adventure?

I have security in particular aspects. My job and my relationship being the main ones.

Adventure, nah I’ve done all of that, I’ve got numerous tee shirts to prove it.

For me it’s now comfort. I have it in my relationship but not my job. I have itchy feet in that aspect.

When I’m in a position to vacate this role I would have then found the comfort I seek.

It will come.

Patience young man….

Retirement beckons

Dinner for 14 please..

If you could host a dinner and anyone you invite was sure to come, who would you invite?

Strange one this, it would have to be a mix of those who are living and those who have passed.

It would be something like this:

  • My Wife – we always have plenty to talk about, relevant and irrelevant.
  • My brother John – passed away a few years back, but such a funny soul.
  • My Mum – again passed away but such a beautiful kind soul.
  • Karl Sagan – this guy cemented my interest in the universe with his Cosmos tv series and the book I still have to this day.
  • Professor Brian Cox – the modern version of Karl, and someone he could talk to, I’d love to eavesdrop this conversation.
  • Michael Stipe of REM – my favourite group, I have so many questions and what a lovely guy.
  • Michael Collins – Apollo 11, what was it like to be floating about out there when your colleagues were getting all the acclaim on the lunar surface?
  • My Brother in law Tel – always good company.
  • My sister in law Liz – absolutely lovely, and always ready to stir it up.
  • My sister Anne – a duplicate of my dear mum.
  • Bob Marley – my introduction to Reggae.
  • Bing Crosby – my dad’s favourite singer, and I was brought up listening to him, as I don’t want my dad there this would be close enough to him.
  • My Nan – Dads mum. A lovely tortured suffering soul that would do anything for anyone.

That’s about it. What a mixture of people. I’m sure I’d sit there for ages just holding the hands of my loved ones and just listening and savouring every little moment.

Perfect

Happy days everyone

Wine & life

What do you think gets better with age?

Wine…. old movies, aged steak and being happy with your lot.

My life in a nutshell 😂

Easy.

A little shift here and there

What time do you go to bed and wake up currently?

Anyone who works shifts as well as I have for the last 30+ years will testify that setting times for sleeping and waking up is about as much use as a chocolate fire poker. It just can’t be done.

I sometimes drop like a log in the early afternoon and have a nap. I’m sometimes walking around the house at 2 in the morning wide awake and ready to go. Shift work does that to you it kills any remainder of circadian rhythm.

I do what my body says. And I’m a slave to that. Forget what all the “Specialists” say in that you must have your 8hrs sleep – pure tosh.

They need to get with it and realise this world is on shift work and the nine to fivers are a rarity in these times we live in.

I sleep when my body says, I wake when it tells me. And that could be at anytime within a 24hr period.

Have a good day people. Just take a nap. You’ll feel better for it.

Hedgehog disagreement at the bowl

We are so fortunate. Last evening we had two hedgehogs visit our bowl at the same time and it resulted in a little bit of argy bargy. I believe this was a dominant male and a younger one or a young female. Watch the video here and listen out for the noise they make:

Hog cam fight

Getting two together is quite a rare occurrence, so I am quite pleased that on only night three of having the camera back in use I have captured this. It’s great to see them, and they are more than welcome to come and have a punch up in my garden. They know they are welcome here 🦔

Have a super day…

Absolutely pathetic…

What strategies do you use to increase comfort in your daily life?

This site don’t half ask some pretty stupid questions at times. Using this title as a suggestion as if everyone makes a strategic plan to introduce comfort into their life. if you have to plan comfort into your daily routine then something is seriously wrong in your outlook. Give your head a wobble.

It’s my opinion yes, you might disagree, that’s fine that’s your choice, but don’t bother me with “Strategies” when it’s just overthinking and over analysing what is a natural everyday occurrence.

Retirement & Hedgehogs

What are you most excited about for the future?

Yeah I’ve mentioned it before, I’m fed up with work and want to retire and all things going well in just over two years that will become reality.

In other news it’s been a busy period recently with the Hedgehogs returning to our garden. So for the first time this season I put the Hedgehog cam out again and it didn’t disappoint. Have a look at this video here:

Latest Hog Cam

Even our feral cat who guards the garden sussed the camera out, she knows every inch of her domain. The hogs don’t bother her and they just all go about their business. It really is a lovely sight.

The fact they continue to visit our garden after we’ve developed it as a sanctuary for them always excites me. They are a rare and endangered species that needs our help and support.

Here’s to the hogs.

Have a peaceful day.

Don’t let go

What could you let go of, for the sake of harmony?

Nothing. I have nothing personally, materially or mentally that I want to offload and certainly not to be harmonious to someone else. The disharmony is normally due to someone’s inability to accept someone has something they don’t.

Don’t envy, admire.

Rock and Crooner and a bit of classic

What is your favorite genre of music?

I really have quite an eclectic choice in music. I was brought up on the crooners of the 50s and 60s such as Como, Crosby and Sinatra whom I still love to this day. I also love rock, Heavy metal and Classical and one particular couple of months a few years ago this was my agenda:

  • Week one – Iron Maiden at the O2 in London
  • Week Two – Russel Watson at Watford Colloseum
  • Week Three – The Prodigy at the O2 in London
  • And three weeks later – Metallica at the O2 London

Man my ears ached for weeks but I absolutely loved it. The purity of a five piece string ensemble right through to the thrash sound of one of the worlds Rock mega groups, how’s that for musical range?

Kasabian & Kaiser chiefs

Nothings changed, in fact this very day I will be heading off to Leicesters Victoria park to see Summer solstice #2 (Kasabian and the Kaiser chiefs amongst others) and guess what? In typical UK style is raining cats and dogs.

But it will be a good day.

Peace all.

Mamekara Karaoke machine

This video sums it up, apologies to those with sensitive hearing:

The pub singer

Anyway, enough of the frivolities, let’s see what’s wrong and try to fix it.

On initial examination, everything seems to be there, no damage to the shell. Four AA batteries inserted and I do hear some feedback from the mic.

Four AA batteries

There are some volume controls that control the tape sound versus mic sound, there is also a speech on and off switch along with a balance control, these seem to work intermittently and I suspect they might just need contacts cleaning.

The tape seems to sort of work but the play button does not stay on, the recorded sound is slow. Echo and balance buttons also seem to work but again probably need contacts cleaning. I suspect the belt of the cassette needs replacing and the tape heads will need cleaning.

Cassette runs slow

Good news is that for once there is no corrosion on the battery contacts.

I will now have to open the unit up to observe closer.

Once inside there are a couple of issues that show straight away. The two drive belts are very loose and will require replacing, luckily I have a bag full of these that should do the job. There is also a wire detached that controls the motor, this will need re attaching at both ends.

I’ve reattached the wire and replaced the two drive belts. I’ve checked the board and found what looks like a burnt capacitor, but checks confirm there is no issue. Looks like the component has a small burn on it as a result of an earlier soldering attempt, probably during manufacture.

The main issue is that the play button will not engage. I spent a good 30 minutes scratching my head here until I spent some time clicking the buttons that worked and the stop button. There is a catch on the rear of the tape head that should click into the sliding stop mechanism when depressed, this was not quite making the full range of travel. A pair of pinch nose pliers and a slight adjustment of about 1mm ensured we were now working. I was worried I might over stress this catch, however it was made of steel and I had nothing to worry about. See the video below:

Loose belts and non engaging play button

There was nothing wrong with any of the volume controls or switches, so I used some contact cleaning spray and vigorously operated them for a minute or so each. This worked just fine.

I then reassembled the unit, put in some batteries and hey presto, good loud clean sound. I put a tape in and it played just fine, probably better than some of the Walkmans I’ve fixed lately.

Excuse the pub singing

I’ve put a little video up above of me singing into it, I haven’t played a tape due to copyright issues that might occur. I’ve sent the video to the family of me singing with a tape and they are suitably bemused, the unit now sits in our garden pub awaiting more customers, once I get a few Karaoke tapes to use.

Fully working in our garden pub.

The only thing I’m going to do is replace the foam mic cover, I’ve managed to source one and that should be here shortly. I’ve also found some cheap old Karaoke tapes that I’ll store in the pub for the families entertainment.

I’ve really enjoyed this little project, and once again I’ve salvaged another item that was broken from the 90s and saved it from landfill. It lives on.

Good job 👍
